Treatment and prevention professionals often experience vicarious and secondary trauma that can lead to burnout and negatively impact services to clients. Participants will be given the opportunity to reflect upon how this reality affects their personal and professional lives and identify personal and organizational practices that can help mitigate the risks and improve services.
Participants will engage in a series of activities that are designed to help them assess the impact that vicarious and secondary trauma have on their personal and professional lives as well as identify and practice several self-care basics. Throughout the workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to participate in activities that are not only enjoyable but can become part of a self-care rhythm.

Participants will be able to name/explain/use:
- A common language for trauma, stress, secondary trauma, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout
- Personal risk factors, warning signs and protective factors for personal, professional and organizational trauma
- Reasons why an understanding of trauma and stress from the caregiver’s viewpoint is critical to providing quality, effective services
- Reasons why caring creates risks and the importance of having strategies to mitigate these risks
- Personal self-care rhythms that are sustainable
